What is your go to in the face of a challenge or difficult time? Do you ever get totally overwhelmed with emotion and wonder how do I handle this now? This is when I turn to my Positive Psychology Tool kit. I also always think about what Jon Kabat Zinn said…….

So what are some things you can try to do when it’s all just too much. These are a few of my micro interventions that are easy to apply to everyday life.

 1.  TAKE A PAUSE AND BREATHE – I like this 3 step breath exercise because it brings you into your body, gratitude, and intention.                                                                                                                                                                a.Breathe in deep to your belly and when you breathe out take notice of your body.                                             b.Breathe in again and when you breathe out think of what you are grateful for right here in the moment, not past or future.                                                                                                                                                                             c. Breathe in again and when you breathe out think of what your intention is for the moment. Curiosity? Calm?

2.RAIN – Rain is an acronym from Tara Brach in her new book Radical Compassion which stands for Recognize, Allow, Investigate and Nurture.                                                                                                                                              R- What is happening inside me?                                                                                                                                            A- Can I be with this?                                                                                                                                                                  I- What is REALLY happening inside me?                                                                                                                               N-Can I be with this…with Kindness and nurture myself?

3. Journaling is a great way to unload some of your fears, sadness, anxiety. James Pennybakers research has shown it to be very helpful.

4.Movement– get up and MOVE. Kelly McGonigals new book, The Joy of Movement shows her research on how exercise helps us find happiness, hope, connection, and courage. Great go to!

5.Serenity Prayer is always a good mantra.
